This frozen mocha protein shake is the best summer alternative to iced coffee. A perfect post workout protein shake in the hot summer months.
Let's talk breakfast. Who eats it? Who just drinks coffee with ghee in it? Nah, not me. I need to have at least 15-20 grams of protein in the morning or else I become a hangry monster (just ask my co-workers). Most of the time I work out before work and mocha protein shake is just what I need afterwards. A little caffeine fix, chocolate and protein 🙂
This mocha protein shake is perfect for those mornings when you are scrambling to get out the door and haven't even brewed your coffee yet. This happens all too often at my house. I am good about getting up on time, but I always forget to brew the coffee ahead of time! Most mornings I brew my coffee in my Chemex carafes. Sometimes I make a little extra cup or two and pour it into ice cubes trays for a frozen mocha protein shake for those mornings that are busy.
I just started to pour my leftover coffee into ice cube containers last summer and it was a game-ccccchanger! No more wasted coffee and I finally used my new silicone ice cube trays.
My favorite thing about this recipe is it kills three birds with one stone. My caffeine addiction, protein need and breakfast requirement in one drink! Also, what's better on a hot summer morning than swapping out that steamy cup of coffee for a tasty frozen slurpy drink? *crickets*
Why do I need a protein shake?
Well here's the thing, you don't need one but most people don't get enough protein throughout the day. With veganism, vegetarianism and whatever other -ism you want to call yourself on the rise these days, most lack meat. This is great! But we just want to make sure we are replacing our protein needs with other food in our diets. Think dairy, whole grains, lentils, nuts and beans.
In my day job, I stress protein to all my patients. Most of them have poor appetites, chronic inflammation and/or diseases that contribute to depleted protein stores. Cue the protein shakes and nutritional supplements.
This mocha protein shake can be made with any protein supplement you prefer. Don't want to use a supplement? Try using greek yogurt and adding a tsp of cocoa to get that "mocha" flavor.
