These chewy oatmeal raisin cookies are a classic at my parents' house. They are made with oatmeal and honey and I've also been known to toss in some walnuts!
Growing up, my mom always had some sort of baked good in the house. She would whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies or 7 layer bars before I knew it and the house would smell amazing.
As I've grown up, I've taken to her ways. In college, it was all about healthy desserts, as healthy eating was all the rage and I fell into an eating disorder called, orthorexia. Studying dietetics didn't help. I realized I had a problem and reached out to a counselor at the campus's health clinic. I recently discovered some emails where I would over analyze and stress about every single bite of unhealthy food that I consumed.
It was definitely not a period of my life that I enjoyed, but in hindsight I'm happy I went through it and overcame it. I know the majority of dietitians out there have had some sort of eating disorder, how can we not have? Going to school and learning about "good" and "bad" foods plants seeds in your brain and sometimes it's hard to shake those thoughts out of your head.
Some people ask me how I overcame orthorexia and I don't know how to answer it really. It's just something that I grew out of and realized that there is more to life than counting calories, eating "super clean" and not enjoying going out to eat at restaurants or drinks with your friends. Life is too short.
Anyways, back to these chewy oatmeal raisin cookies...my mom used to make me these when she visited me at school. They always were so comforting to me and reminded me of home and I'm happy to share them with you guys!
Ingredients & Substitutions for Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
- Honey: I love the stickiness and flavor the honey gives in these oatmeal cookies! You can swap out maple syrup or agave. If you don't have a liquid sweetener, you can swap for regular white sugar, but they are chewier with honey.
- Brown sugar: The recipe calls for a quarter cup, you can use light or dark!
- Butter/Coconut oil: These are interchangeable, but I think the oatmeal cookie spreads better with butter!
- Oats: Old fashioned oats work well with this recipe! You could use quick cooking, but I would recommend old fashioned.
- Flour: The original recipe is made with white flour, but you could use whole wheat flour. Just cut back on the amount of flour you use. If you use almond flour, you might want to try checking out these oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies with almond flour!
- Raisins: Raisins will make these cookies a bit sweeter! If you don't want them super sweet, I would cut back on the amount of raisins.

Another thing I love about this recipe is that it makes 2 dozen cookies (at least) depending on the size of cookie you do!

I followed this recipe to the "T" and was very disappointed. Far from 'chewy' they were DRY & crumbly. Will not use this recipe again. Even with the raisins and cranberries- they were dry.
