This blueberry smoothie is creamy and smooth. It has a hint of chocolate and a burst of sweetness from the cherries. It's a refreshing breakfast option that will leave you feeling full and energized.

I had a difficult time naming this blueberry smoothie because it is essentially a chocolate covered cherry and blueberry smoothie, but I couldn't name it that. It's made with frozen blueberries, frozen cherries, dates and protein powder.
Since being diagnosed with interstitial cystitis, it has really affected my smoothie game. I can't really consume tropical fruits anymore or bananas. I know bananas, out of all fruits?! You wouldn't expect it to be acidic, but for some reason it upsets my bladder, so I've had to improvise my smoothies a bit. Another food that my body cannot really tolerate anymore is yogurt, so I've had to modify by putting other ingredients in my smoothies to make it creamier and boost up the protein.
Let's talk blender options. If you don't have a blender, you should get one! They are great for sauces, dressings, smoothies, soups and frozen drinks! I personally think the Magic Bullet Blender is a great value!
Why is this blueberry smoothie good for me?
This blueberry smoothie recipe is full of antioxidants!
- Blueberries: You can use fresh or frozen blueberries for this recipe and both have the same amount of antioxidants! Not only do they have a high amount of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but they also have a high amount of dietary fiber! One cup of blueberries has four grams of dietary fiber that will help to keep your blood pressure down and fight against obesity and other metabolic diseases.
- Cherries: Cherries are a powerhouse in terms of nutrition. They have cancer fighting properties, help balance blood pressure and ease muscle soreness.
- Dates: I used dates to sweeten up this blueberry smoothie and provide potassium for post-workout fuel. If dates aren't your thing you can use half a banana!
- Chocolate protein powder: I will be doing a post soon on what to look for when it comes to protein powder! I used a whey protein that was chocolate flavored for this recipe. The protein in it keeps me full for longer and feeds my hungry body after a workout.
